The Empakai crater is the only one in the region with a lake covering more than half of its crater floor, it has the tallest rim of all the others. Therefore, use caution and examine the type of footwear you’ll wear while traveling to the Empakai Crater for a walking safari. The eastern crater wall of the Empakai crater is touched by the road from Ol Doinyo Lengai. This steep, well-kept track descends from the road into a montane forest rich in birdlife and ranging in altitude from 2700 to 3200 meters. Keep your eyes peeled for encounters with creatures like hyenas, buffaloes, blue monkeys, or even elephants. This is the beautiful part about hiking here, Discovering the Secrets of the Empakai Crater

Trekking experience at the crater

Watch for views of the turquoise lake below and the ideal volcanic cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai out to the northeast as you make your way to the crater floor. You should allow 30 minutes to get to the shoreline and an hour to get back up there. The lake can be circled on foot, but it will take at least four hours.

Walking safaris inside the crater, where visitors can spend a day exploring the lake and rain forest, are also well-liked. The sole restriction is that you must leave before sundown because there are no other camping areas outside the designated ones on the rim. The crater is home to a variety of wild creatures because it is a part of the Ngorongoro conservation area, so anyone visiting it must be accompanied by an armed ranger.

A longer walking safari that can last up to 5 days and extend as far as Lake Natron can include trips to the crater as well. As you move closer to the crater bottom and Lake Empakai, the vegetation inside the crater gradually transforms from dense vegetation to tiny bushes. A sandy shoreline surrounds Lake Empakai, but it is typically only reachable during the drier seasons when the lake’s water levels drop.
