Easter Holidays in Tanzania

Easter Holidays in Tanzania

An Easter Holiday is a great way for families to reconcile, connect, and celebrate. The celebration marks an important milestone in Christianity, but it’s more than that. You can spend this holiday differently by going on an African safari, particularly in Tanzania. We understand what you might be thinking – heavy rains, thick vegetation, and wet trails – simply because it’s the long rainy season. In this version, we dive into the celebration of Easter in Tanzania and where you should plan to spend it in Tanzania.

How is Easter celebrated in Tanzania?

Simply put, there’s no great differences in Easter celebrations in Tanzania and other countries in Africa. People gather in churches for worship, prayers, and other services. Gatherings are common during Good Friday and Easter Sunday in churches and sometimes in public areas.  Families also gather in homesteads to enjoy festive meals, marking new beginnings particularly after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And there are a lot of community events as this celebration takes center stage. Notable changes include adornment of churches, houses, and roads with striking colors.

Is Easter Safari worth it?

So, should you spend Easter holidays on Tanzania safaris? Of course, imagine sharing a lion sight with ones you care about the most. Or think of a beautiful bird or a butterfly flying over your safari vehicle. It’s worth a picture. You will spend this wonderful holiday with nature, in which we all live. And the best part is, you will have a lot of free time to meditate in designated areas in most safari lodges. So, we are confidently advising you to try something different this year, to celebrate Easter on a Tanzania safari.

Best places for Easter Holidays in Tanzania

Arusha

Arusha is a gateway to the most famous destinations in Tanzania – that is Mount Kilimanjaro, Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater. Aside from being the entry and exit point for most travelers, Arusha is a wonder in itself. The city teems with a variety of tribes, majestic buildings, and the state-of-art infrastructure. The majority of people living here are predominantly Christians. Therefore, the Easter holiday is treated as a special celebration.

In Arusha, you choose how to celebrate it. With the community or without it. If you love company, then attend community gatherings in churches and congregations. Some families also invite visitors as a symbol of unity to commemorate the life of Jesus Christ, but accept invitations only if you feel comfortable. Different hotels and camps also throw parties, especially on Easter Sunday night.

If you are an animal lover, a drive to Tarangire would be the best thing for you. Watch elephants and baobabs. These giant companions decorate the landscape of Tarangire National Park. You can also see lions, giraffes, and hippos along the life-saving Tarangire River. Lake Manyara, the home of tree-climbing lions and flamingos, is also one and half hour drive from Arusha while Arusha National Park, home to Mount Meru, giraffes, and Momella Lakes, is just 30-minute drive from the center of the this town.

Dar es Salaam

The largest capital of Tanzania has something to offer for your Easter trip. It’s, of course, the busiest city in the country, so expect a lot of vibes and activities. But if you are someone who loves vibes, this city has a spot for you. Dar is the entry and (probably) exit town for people visiting southern parks, such as Nyerere National Park, Ruaha National Park, and Mikumi National Park.

The city borders the Indian Ocean to the east, and is home to some of the white sandy, palm-lined beaches on the mainland coast. Want to feel cool breezes? Why not visit Coco Beach where visitors and locals meet, swim, and share the vibes. If you want somewhere away from the crowds, take a 15-minute flight south of Dar es Salaam to Fanjove Island.

Zanzibar

A beach holiday on the tropical beaches of Zanzibar is another best way to celebrate your Easter holiday. Zanzibar may be crowded in the high season, July to October, but in April, even the most popular beaches like Kendwa and Nungwi are quiet. The majority of Zanzibar residents are Muslims. Should you worry about them? No, not all. In Zanzibar, everyone is treated equally regardless of religion. Respect is mutual. That means you will enjoy this Easter holiday with no pressure.

For a quiet beach holiday, fly to Pemba Island in the north. This green island is not as busy as the main island throughout the year. Guests can enjoy secluded beaches, snorkel and dive locations, and clear visibility under the water.

What will the weather be like in April?

Easter Sunday in 2026 falls on 5th of April. This is when Tanzania enters the long rainy season. So, we expect heavy downpours, and this usually affects wildlife safaris in national parks and reserves. If you want to see wild animals, set off for famous spots, including Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro Crater for good reason. First, they are neither crowded nor pricey as they seem to be during the high season. In addition, camps are still available.

Only a few camps close as the number of visitors dwindles. And lastly, these parks never disappoint even with heavy raining cats and dogs. If you are ready to book your Easter holiday with Focus East Africa Tours, contact our expert safari advisors.
