Tanzania Family Safari Guide for 2026/27

Tanzania Family Safari Guide for 2026/27

Tanzania is a thriving destination in East Africa for families, newlywed couples, or any adventure-seeker. Whether you want to view wildlife at its purest form or relax on the exquisite beaches of Zanzibar, Tanzania has a place for you.

Exploring the beauty of this fabulous country with your family is an unforgettable experience. Imagine watching your toddler wave at an elephant in the wooded areas of Tarangire or your teen staring at a lion pride in the vast Serengeti plains. Amazing, right?

We know taking your family to Africa may be stressful. You think of the climate, the general safety of the country, keeping them entertained, where to stay… lots of things keep flaring in your mind. We are also here to tell you how stress-free it is to bring your family to Tanzania. In this guide, we’ll describe all the tips you may want for a Tanzania family safari in 2026 and beyond. Let’s start the journey.

Why choose Tanzania for your family safari?

1.     Safety

Tanzania is generally safe for every type of traveler, from a 4-month-old baby to a 90-year-old grandma. There’s no political turmoil in the country, and the people here are remarkably welcoming, from the Hadzabe bushmen to the Maasai herdsmen.

About climate, Tanzania is a tropical country with friendly daily weather. A typical day in the dry season may have temperature variations of 32 to 20 degrees Celsius between day and night. Rainfall is not common in the dry season (June to October), but you can expect morning chills and cold nights.

2.    A variety of destinations

Tanzania is home to plenty of attractions. The only limitation is time. If your kids want to see animals they’ve just seen in a wildlife documentary, then set off for a Serengeti safari or little-known gems like Nyerere (Selous) and Ruaha. If you want to relax on sun-kissed beaches, then fly to Zanzibar.

3.     Family-friendly accommodations

Tanzania has invested much in the tourism sector in most attractions. There are a lot of lodges, camps, hotels, and resorts that prioritize families in their big, comfortable rooms.

In the Serengeti, for example, high-end camps like Singita Sasakwa Lodge, the Four Seasons Serengeti, &Beyond Grumeti River Lodge, and Mwiba Lodge are best.

In Zanzibar, comfortable resorts like Mnemba Island Lodge, Hotel Riu Palace, Melia Zanzibar, and Zuri Zanzibar are the best fits for families. We’ll describe more about accommodations later in this blog.

Precautions before your family safari

In most cases, when you don’t take enough time to plan your safari, things can go south quickly. And this may cause an unforgettable family adventure to quickly descend into chaos. So, we highly recommend that you start planning your trip early. Here are some preps to start with.

1.     Take recommended vaccinations.

A quick reminder that you’re heading to Africa, a continent with different climate and health concerns. That shouldn’t scare you either, but make you responsible for the health of your family.

You have to check with your doctor first for any health recommendations. But we recommend you vaccinate against typhoid, cholera, COVID-19, hepatitis, yellow fever, tuberculosis, and measles. Here’s a note.

  • Tanzania requires a mandatory yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’re coming from a country deemed of high transmission risk. This rule also applies to transits of up to five hours.
  • The COVID-19 vaccine is not compulsory
  • Malaria is present in Tanzania, so we recommend you bring antimalarial drugs and mosquito repellents.

2.    Update travel documents.

Probably you, as parents or guardians, have up-to-date passports, but do your children have them? If not, start the process early. Nothing stresses most families like seeing their travel date approaching while they haven’t sorted out their passports and visas.

For a Tanzanian visa, we recommend you start the application online to avoid a long queue at the airport after a long flight. The next thing is to prepare your debit and credit cards. But remember to bring some cash for personal expenses like souvenirs, tipping, and village visits.

3.     Plan your safari early.

This is very important. Planning early helps you secure lodge spots, which might be limited (depending on the destination), especially when you’re traveling in the peak season. Lodges and camps usually have one or two family tents, which may sell out months in advance.

Planning early also helps you bring the right thing. Some lodges offer essential tools for kids like cribs, diapers, and more. You can save more space in your suitcase after you’ve booked.
