Tanzania Visa Requirements for 2026

Tanzania Visa Requirements for 2026.

Every nature enthusiast loves going to a pristine place where nature is undisturbed. Yes, we have an innate love for nature and everything around it. Tanzania is a place where nature is still and untouched. Whether you want to witness the Great Migration in the Serengeti or climb to the roof of Africa, this fabulous country has something for everyone.

But as for every nation, Tanzania demands several entry requirements for tourists, one of them being a visa. Others include a valid passport (six months with at least one blank page), a yellow fever vaccination (if you come from a country at risk), and inbound travel insurance (for Zanzibar). In this article, we discuss everything you need to apply for (and get) a Tanzanian visa. We’ll also talk about what has changed in 2026.

But first, let’s start with the basics. What’s a Tanzania visa?

Well, this is a permit granted for any visitor entering the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) for a specified period. To be clear, the URT encompasses Zanzibar. Which means you don’t need a different travel visa for Zanzibar if you already have one for the mainland and vice versa.

And who needs a Tanzania visa?

Any foreigner who plans to enter the URT requires a travel visa. But there are some exceptions for some countries with visa abolition agreements with this country. Some of these countries include members of the East African Community (EAC), like Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, and the DR Congo. Types of Visa.

Tanzania issues different categories of visa, including single-entry visa, multiple-entry visa, business visa, gratis visa, and transit visa. What’s the difference? Let’s explore:

Single-entry visa

A single-entry visa is for a visitor planning to enter Tanzania once and stay for not more than three months. Anyone planning to stay on holiday, do business, get healthy treatment, study, or do any legal activity in Tanzania for a specified period can apply for this visa.

You will need the following:

  • Your valid passport (at least six months). At least one blank page is required.
  • Two passport-size photos.
  • Return ticket.
  • A visa fee of $50.

Multiple-entry visa.

If you plan to enter Tanzania several times a year, we recommend you get a multiple-entry visa. It allows you to enter the country as many times as you want, provided that a single stay does not exceed 90 days. All American visitors are required to possess this type of visa.

You’ll need the following:

  • A valid passport.
  • Two passport-size photos.
  • Return ticket.
  • A visa application fee of $100.
  • Security Bond duly filled

Business visa.

This visa is special for guests coming for business. Which can be special assignments (like fixing a machine) or any legal business activity. It’s always valid for three months and not extendable.

You require the following:

  • A valid passport.
  • Two passport-sized photos.
  • Return ticket.
  • A visa application of $250.
  • A registration document from your host institution.
  • A work contract or a cover letter describing your role.

Transit visa.

This visa is good if you plan to transit through Tanzania for a period not exceeding seven days.

You will require the following:

  • A valid passport.
  • Two passport-sized photos.
  • An entry visa or onward ticket to your intended destination.

If you’re a diplomat or an official representing any international organization, this visa is for you. This visa also applies to your dependents. You will have to show an official passport or any travel document from your organization.

Student Visa.

Are you a foreign student admitted to any learning institution in Tanzania? Then apply for this visa. But there’s an exception. If you intend to learn a language, then you can apply for a 3-month student visa because language learning institutions aren’t eligible for a 2-year visa.

Exceptions

  • All American visitors have to apply for a multiple-entry Tanzania visa.
  • The fee for a single-entry visa for Pakistan and Ireland nationals is $200 and $100, respectively.

How to apply for a Tanzania visa.

You can submit your application online or in person. We highly recommend starting it online. Some applications may take longer to be verified. This may cause delays to your planned excursions.

Some countries require a referral visa. That means visitors from these countries require special clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration or the Commissioner of Immigration (Zanzibar).

For this case, it’s better to start your application early before booking your flight. See a list of countries that require referrals here (https://www.za.tzembassy.go.tz/services/category/visa-information).
