Six Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Tanzania

We’ve no doubt about the true beauty of Tanzania. And it has been said by most of our guests that wildlife reserves, towering mountains, and warm local communities can’t be found anywhere else in the world. As you think of this travel gem, you may want to select a few spots to start with. This is because you can’t explore Tanzania in just one holiday unless that holiday is more than 10 years. Jokes! Here are our six most beautiful places to visit in Tanzania. Each offers an unparalleled experience, so take time to visit.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is widely known for its ‘signature’ migration of ungulates (wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles), a spectacle it shares with the Masai Mara in Kenya. On top of that, this park hosts the most sought-after Big Five animals (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino). It also hosts an abundance of predators, including the big cats—lions, leopards, and cheetahs—that shape the large population of herbivores.

Serengeti is perfect for first-timers looking for wildlife-rich places with countless options of safari accommodations. Crowds are common in the peak season, June to October, when the weather is good and wildlife viewing is easier. Spend at least three days in this thriving destination.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Adjacent to the Serengeti is a World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It’s home to some of the thriving destinations. On top of the list is the Ngorongoro Crater. This large unbroken caldera spans 264 square kilometers and is home to the highest concentration of animals. People come here to search for the Big Five animals and other animals, such as wildebeest, zebras, impalas, hyenas, and gazelles.

Other features worth a hike are Olmoti Crater and Empakai Crater. The former is excellent for walking toward waterfalls and other spectacular landscapes. The latter is a good place to watch lesser flamingos on the shore of the lake that accounts for 75% of the crater floor. A visit to the Maasai communities is a wonderful way to conclude your tour. One or two days are enough for the conservation area.

Zanzibar

It’s inspiring to combine a safari in the mainland with a beach holiday on one of the islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago. You can also go there solely for exploring the white sandy beaches of this idyllic archipelago. The island we often call Zanzibar is actually Unguja, and it is the largest. It may get traffic, especially in the high season (July to October). To avoid this, you can visit the lesser-known islands of Pemba and Mafia and the beach on your own. If money is not a hindrance, you can stay on private islands, like Bawe, Thanda, Chapwani, and Mnemba.

Kilimanjaro National Park

This park lies in northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border. Mount Kilimanjaro is the major drawcard here. People come here to hike Africa’s highest peak. Towering at 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro takes your breath away as you watch it from a distance. The white snow at the top is visible from various locations in Tanzania and Kenya (especially from Amboseli National Park).

You don’t require special mountaineering skills to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro. All you need is stamina and a small amount of training. While there are seven routes, choosing the wrong one may ruin your hike. If you have exposure to high altitudes, pick Marangu, Rongai, or Machame. But if you’re a pro climber, try the Umbwe, Shira, and Northern Circuit routes.

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere (Selous) is a remote park in the southeast of Tanzania. It’s the country’s largest park. But the number of guests is yet to catch up. Here, you’ll explore pristine forests, woodlands, and savannahs. If you’re a wildlife photographer, this is a fantastic place to get the best shots.

In terms of wildlife, Nyerere hosts various species, including buffalo, wildebeest, elephants, lions, zebras, leopards, and hippos. There’s a chance to encounter the Big Five and rare canids like the African wild dogs. Nyerere offers unique activities on top of traditional game drives. You can explore it by boat on its lakes or along the Rufiji River. Other activities include night safaris and fly camping.

Lake Manyara National Park

Located in northern Tanzania is Lake Manyara National Park. Its size is as small as 330 square kilometers, but the wonders in it are countless. The area is a beautiful park featuring a variety of habitats, including savannahs, woodlands, lakes, and groundwater forests.  It’s perfect for watching the tree-climbing lions. During the afternoons, these majestic predators take their nap on a branch of an acacia tree.

The beautiful soda lake is perfect for canoeing and fishing. You can also watch lesser flamingos in the shallow waters of the lake. Other activities offered here include a treetop canopy walk, walking safaris, and night game drives.
