Is Ngorongoro crater in the Serengeti, is one of the most common questions many guests ask before, during and after the safari. It’s unfair for one to say no to the question yet the transit route from the starting point one enters Ngorongoro gate to the last point one exits Serengeti in Nkoma gate the vegetation is the same with the endless plains seen no boundaries separating the two parks apart from only the signposts showing the demarcations.

The western woodlands of Grumeti River have a large number of Elephants and buffalos throughout the year while the migration of the wildebeest happens in June when the wildebeest cross the river.

Before Ngorongoro Conservation Area was created all the crater region formed the Serengeti Ecosystem.

After seeing the negative impact of hunting in the protected area, the restricted hunting permits were introduced in 1921 and in 1928 all hunting permits along the crater rim was completely prohibited as Serengeti national park was created in 1951 which covered entire current Ngorongoro conservation Area. The creation of the park sparked out problems on the local Masaai people who were coexisting with the animals at the parkand other tribes and this resulted into the formation of Ngorongoro Conservation Area Ordinance in 1959 that separated the conservation area with the Serengeti national park.

Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area was created as a resettlement option for the local people who were affected by the creation of the park. The fact remains that Ngorongoro crater is part of Serengeti national park ecosystem that covers from Northwest and Southern Serengeti plains. The Serengeti ecosystem is recovering well as the number of Black Rhinos are increasing with the population concentrating in Ngorongoro crater and Moru Kopjes of Serengeti giving guests more chances of sighting all the African Big 5 (Lions, Leopards, Rhino, Buffalo, and Elephants)

The wildebeest migration that moves all year around in the great Serengeti migration starting from the Southern Ndutu area of Ngorongoro following the weather season of the park to the Mara river where its climax happens in the further northern part of Serengeti. This has created a busy schedule of the Serengeti ecosystem that guests follow when planning for their safari experience in Tanzania.
